Abstract

The phenomena of democratic backsliding in Asia requires an in-depth analysis of social factors that contribute to the decline of democracy. This study will explore the intersections between a country’s Left-Right (L-R) political spectrum, their state of political parties, and the rise of populist leaders. How far do these three political phenomena contribute to the occurrence of democratic backsliding? By comparing findings from India, Indonesia, and the Philippines, this study aims to explain how the L-R political spectrum of voters is related to their party  preferences. The study finds this variable to be strongly related to the emergence of strong leaders who utilize identity politics and political ideology as an adhesive tool for gathering mass public support. These populist tactics, in turn, chisel away mechanisms and claims for democratic accountability.

Abstract

This paper highlights the impact of media ownership on the democratic process in Indonesia. The research employs literature analysis and case studies to gather data from various relevant sources. The findings indicate that the concentration of media ownership significantly affects democracy in Indonesia, in the sense that it may lead to a proliferation of biased information and opinions,  while simultaneously hampering the diversity of perspectives  within society. However, these risks can be mitigated by sustaining press freedom, effective regulations, and strong public participation; Transparency, accountability, and robust media freedom are highly necessary to ensure a healthy diversity of media ownership and equitable information distribution in Indonesia. The article concludes that it is important to continuously monitor and study the relationship between media ownership and political influence within the context of democracy in Indonesia. Collaboration among the government, media, and civil society is key to maintaining a healthy balance between media freedom and the protection of a diverse and inclusive democratic process

Abstract

Since 2019, the COVID-19 pandemic has given significant impacts to people's lives. The order of the community's social life—in terms of economic, social, political, and cultural—has experienced significant changes in its efforts to deal with the pandemic. Besides impacting public health, the economic downturn due to the pandemic has put pressure on society. Most people in Bali, who economically relied on the tourism sector, nonetheless felt a much greater impact during this time. After nearly two years of dealing with the pandemic, people demand a change in the way of life through great societal adjustments for their recovery. The state's strengthened role was not enough to mitigate this situation. At this point, civil society has a strategic role in accelerating the recovery of people's social life. This paper argues that civil society can play an important role in helping the recovery of social life and the economic sector of citizens. Therefore, this research seeks to examine the strategic role of civil society after the COVID-19 pandemic in Bali using the case study method. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews and observations with key civil society actors. Learning from the Bali case, this research shows that the civil society has great potential in overcoming the COVID-19 pandemic.

Abstract

This study attempts to inspect the issue of gender politics in Indonesia, focusing on the electoral struggle of female legislative candidates in the region of Bengkulu. The UN’s program, Planet 50:50, will be taken into account in gauging the extent of these candidates’ success amidst the predominantly patriarchal culture across three elections (2009, 2014, 2019)... Being a qualitative study based on discourse analysis, this study will primarily employ the concept of social capital by Pierre Bordeau (1986) and David Putnam (1993). Among the significant findings are: first, in addition to building a primordial network of religious and ethnic organizations as every Indonesian legislative candidate commonly does,  female national parliament candidates in Bengkulu must  work harder to create community empowerment to gain more public trust and establish the norm that women are genuinely fit and capable for election and re-election. Second, community empowerment is performed via various programs for first-time voters, youth, women, educators, and farmers; in addition to utilization of different media to promote tourism and market products. This study, hopefully, may enrich pre-existing discourse on gender and politics by juxtaposing its local practices with the ideals encapsulated in the SDG target that is Planet 50:50.

Abstract

Turkey and Indonesia are among a few Muslim-majority countries that have embraced democratisation since their independence. While the development of their democracies is not linear and marred with periods of autocratic regimes, the debate over the position of Islam within the secular state has remained relevant throughout the history of the modern Indonesian and Turkish Republic. This article uses Comparative Historical Analysis to examine how the contention over Islam in politics has been utilised by populist groups espousing  Islamic aspirations as their ideological basis. This article argues that the formation and success of Islamic populist currents in Turkey and Indonesia is not dictated by their specific political and economic conditions, but also by their different adoption of secularism. Comparative analysis of these two countries is conducted in two steps. First, I explain the specific historical trajectories of secularisation, democratisation, and state-building of both Turkey and Indonesia. Second, I contrast both countries to demonstrate how their diverging process of secularisation has impacted the political success of Islamic populism. This article concludes that a stricter adoption of Secularism in Turkey has, inadvertently, brought more decisive success to Turkish Islamic populist groups; on the other hand, the ambiguous secularisation in Indonesia has hindered its Islamic populist forces from enjoying a similar degree of success. A stricter adoption of Secularism in Turkey brings more decisive success to Islamic populist groups, while an ambiguous approach in Indonesia hinders the Islamic populist groups from enjoying the same success.
